You know that your business has registered for its domain (i.e. the URL people use to find you online). You also know that you had to pay money to get – and keep – that domain. With what you’ve invested, you definitely don’t want to lose your domain. Be careful, though, what you do to keep it.

A recent scam has cropped up that reaches out to businesses saying their domain registration is about to expire. Sent via letter or email, the scam often lines up with your actual domain renewal date, making it look legitimate. But, don’t respond – and definitely don’t send money – unless it’s directly from your registrar! These scammers mine WHOIS databases to find out when different business’s domains need to be renewed.

Unless you’re contacted directly by your domain registrar, you can (and should!) ignore information you get about your domain renewal. While these scams can be a helpful reminder that you need to pay to renew your domain soon, they can also be a sinkhole for your business’s money if you’re not careful. To be safe, mark your renewal dates on your calendar and go straight to your registrar to renew.
