Google’s newest algorithm, nick-named “Mobilegeddon” will begin to take effect tomorrow, April 21st, but will likely take a few days to weeks to complete. Labeled the “Mobile Friendly” update, Google intends to benefit and boost the ranking of mobile-friendly pages within mobile search results. Meaning, this will not impact desktop or tablet searchers but is solely for mobile smartphone devices.
Concerned about your website being mobile-friendly? Just plug in your URL here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
Common reasons a website isn’t mobile-friendly:
- Content is wider than the mobile screen, causing the user to scroll side-to-side.
- Text is too small, causing the user to zoom in and out.
- Links are grouped together too closely, links should be separated so they are easy to click on.
Although there are rumors going around that your site will be delisted if it is not mobile-friendly, we are here to clear up the confusion. No de-listing will occur, however websites that are mobile-friendly will be ranked higher compared to those that are not.
No matter what industry you are in, most consumer traffic is from mobile online sources. With that being said, Google wants all users to have an easy and convenient experience when searching online.
