- Microsoft Buys LinkedIn. Perhaps some of the biggest news to come out of last month was Microsoft’s major (think: $26.2 billion) purchase of LinkedIn. Look for Microsoft to leverage LinkedIn as a means to extend more services to businesses, including yours. Keep an eye out for integration of Microsoft products and services across your LinkedIn activities.
- Voice Is Getting Bigger. We could be on the verge of the death of the keyboard! Siri, Cortana, and Alexa aren’t just the names of the cool girls on the literal playground. They’re taking over the metaphorical playground of search as voice search grows in popularity. A recent study found that voice search jumped by 10 percent last year and promises to continue to be one of the 2016 tech trends to watch. That means that you need to think about writing the way you talk when creating copy for SEO purposes.
- Instagram Adds Retargeting. Well, technically Facebook is adding retargeting to Instagram. They’re extending their “Dynamic Ads” to the photo-heavy platform in the coming months. That means that people who visit your website could soon see your ad pop up in their Insta feed. If you’re looking for a new way to advertise, consider tapping Instagram’s 500 million users.
- New Logos Are Announced. Both Instagram and Netflix released new logos recently, adding credence to the school of thought that in our modern tech age, the status quo can’t stand. - AdWords Gets Updated. As per usual, Google’s making updates. Since the start of the year, they’ve made some changes to AdWords to make search more uniform from desktop to tablet to smartphone. Whether or not you have a PPC (pay-per-click) campaign running through Google, you’ve probably noticed some of these changes. For example, text ads in desktop search now show up at the top of organic listings instead of in a right rail sidebar. One of the changes we think has great potential is the opportunity to buy ad space on Google Maps. With these in-map ads, you can get higher visibility where it matters most – in your local area.
- Twitter Changes Character Use. In late May, Twitter announced that the 140-character prison in which they’ve held us all is about to get a little roomier. When you reply to a tweet, the @name won’t count in your 140 limit anymore. Similarly, added media (e.g. photos, videos, gifs) won’t add characters either. And you can finally say goodbye to the pesky [email protected] hack people have used to make sure tweets that start with a person’s username can be seen by their entire network. With this change, you’ll have more freedom to share what sets your business apart on this social media platform.
